Northern Ireland is building its reputation as a global leader in medical technology. At the forefront of this movement are the collaborative approaches being offered in the Centre for Digital Healthcare Technology (CDHT) (www.cdht.tech). Led by Ulster University, under the Belfast Region City Deal, CDHT accelerates the transition of cutting-edge research into real-world clinical care, focusing on a range of healthcare challenges, including mental health and aging pillars.

A shining, practical example of the existing innovation ecosystem in Ulster University is the research and launch of InspireD – a groundbreaking, free-to-download mobile application designed to transform dementia care across the region, and beyond. Co-created alongside people living with dementia and their carers, the app utilises digital reminiscence therapy to significantly improve mental health, reduce isolation, and strengthen relationships between users and their loved ones. By bridging the gap between clinical data and lived experience, initiatives like CDHT and InspireD demonstrate how regional technology development provides tangible, compassionate solutions for the future of healthcare.

The Power of Digital Reminiscence

Reminiscence therapy is a psychosocial intervention that prompts memories through personal photographs, sounds, and videos, and has been a cornerstone of dementia care. By bringing this practice into the digital age, InspireD offers a portable, user-friendly platform for families to build a personal digital memory book, enabling powerful therapeutic interactions both at home and in residential care settings.

Inspire D comes at a crucial time for health and social care in Northern Ireland, with over 22,000 people living with dementia in Northern Ireland, with projections to reach 60,000 by 2050, the largest expected increase in dementia diagnosis across the UK. Inspire D considers the mental health of both patients and caregivers.

For people living with dementia, the app serves as a vital tool to improve mood, sustain cognitive engagement, and enhance overall quality of life. By triggering positive past experiences, it helps individuals reconnect with their own sense of identity, offering comfort and reducing the anxiety often associated with memory loss.

For family carers and healthcare professionals, InspireD offers much-needed emotional relief and support. Caring for a loved one with dementia can be an isolating and emotionally exhausting experience. The app provides a structured, positive way to interact, transforming care routines into moments of shared joy. By facilitating deeper conversations, it reduces caregiver stress, combats loneliness, and helps carers see the person behind the diagnosis.

“InspireD is not simply a digital storage device, but a technological and relational bridge”, explains Dr Claire McCauley, Senior Lecturer at Ulster University . “This relationship-centered approach enables those living with isolating conditions or experiencing loneliness to be truly seen, heard, and understood, reconnecting them with themselves and others.”

From Robust Research to a “Dementia-Friendly” Tool for All

The foundation of the InspireD app rests on robust clinical and academic research. A foundational Ulster University study, funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies and the HSC R&D Division, analysed the impact of a personalised digital reminiscence program on 60 people living with dementia and their family carers. The findings were definitive: the intervention directly improved mood, wellbeing, and the core dynamics of caregiver relationships.

Designed via a rigorous, multi-screen co-design process, the app features an intuitive, highly responsive user interface suitable for smartphones, tablets, and web browsers. Key features include:

  • Simple Uploads: An accessible interface allowing users, with the help of a caregiver, to easily upload media.
  • Voice and Typed Notes: A unique feature allowing families to add voice recordings or text to photos and videos, ensuring the specific context of a memory is preserved for future generations.
  • Secure Local Storage: Utilizing advanced built-in database functionality (SQLite) to manage and protect personal data safely on the device.

While originally developed as a dementia-specific tool, continuous iterations have evolved InspireD into a broader dementia-friendly app accessible to anyone interested in the power of reminiscence, including older adults experiencing general loneliness or isolation.

Community Impact and Safety Approval

Inspire D’s underlying research has sparked creative cultural initiatives across Northern Ireland. The findings inspired a local play, ‘The Songbirds’, which was performed to over 2,000 secondary school students, fostering vital empathy and shifting youth attitudes toward dementia. Furthermore, the newly established InspireD Model of Connection recently saw local primary school children co-create a children’s book, ‘An Inspired Adventure’, to explore themes of loneliness and cross-generational connection.

Ensuring the highest standards of digital health, the InspireD app has been rigorously tested and officially approved by ORCHA (the Organisation for the Review of Care and Health Apps). The team at Ulster University invite you to try the app for you and your family, which is now available entirely free of charge on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, as well as desktop web browsers.
