PREVENT is a European project funded under the EU4Health Programme that addresses
critical gaps in mental health support and suicide prevention within the justice sector.
The project focuses on probation officers, correctional staff, and community professionals
working with vulnerable populations, including people under community supervision, ex-
offenders, homeless individuals, and veterans. These groups face disproportionately high
risks of mental health disorders, burnout, and suicide, yet access to structured training,
coordinated policies, and prevention-oriented tools remains limited.
PREVENT aims to strengthen early identification, assessment, and referral of mental health
issues through an integrated, prevention-focused approach. This includes evidence-based
training programmes for justice professionals, the development and piloting of digital
mental health risk assessment tools, and enhanced cross-sector collaboration between
justice, health, and social services. Ultimately, the project seeks to reduce suicide risk,
improve mental health literacy, and contribute to a more resilient and inclusive justice
system across Europe.
As part of the PREVENT consortium, Global Health Connector contributes to the
implementation of prevention-oriented strategies, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder
engagement activities. This includes supporting training, dissemination, policy dialogue, and
the uptake of sustainable practices that strengthen mental health support within justice and
community settings.
