A patient-centric mobile application designed to support people living with cancer

Thessaloniki, Greece – Gnomon Informatics S.A., a pioneer in digital health technologies, has developed the Oncology Patient Mobile Application, a patient-centric digital solution created as part of the project “Integrated Care System for Oncology and Hematology Patients.” The application will soon become available to cancer patients receiving care in 12 hospitals across Greece, providing them with digital tools that support their treatment journey and improve everyday care.

The Oncology Patient Application has been designed to empower patients by giving them secure access to essential information regarding their health status, treatment plan, upcoming appointments, and next steps in their care pathway. The application also includes self-management tools and, in future releases, will offer short teleconsultations with treating physicians, together with additional digital services and support resources to help patients throughout their treatment journey.

Gnomon Informatics was one of the technology companies supporting IDIKA S.A. and the project’s prime contractor NOVA – NOVA ICT, delivering two critical components of the national initiative: the Interoperability Hub and the Oncology Patient Mobile Application.

The technical challenges and innovative aspects of the project were presented by Kostis Kaggelidis, CEO of Gnomon Informatics, and Korina Papadopoulou, Project Manager responsible for the development of the patient application, during the 3rd Synergies Forum on Cancer, held in Athens from 29 June to 1 July and organized by the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK).

“As digital health continues to reshape healthcare delivery, this project represents a milestone for oncology care in Greece,” said Kostis Kaggelidis, CEO of Gnomon Informatics. “The Integrated Care System has been designed according to the specifications of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) and is interoperable with the European Cancer Information System (ECIS). Above all, it is a patient-centered initiative that strengthens collaboration between patients and healthcare professionals while supporting patients throughout their navigation of the healthcare system.”

Addressing the needs of thousands of cancer patients

According to official statistics, more than 65,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in Greece, while thousands of oncology and hematology patients require continuous support throughout their care journey.

The Integrated Care System responds to this need by leveraging digital technologies to improve patients’ daily lives and strengthen oncology and hematology services nationwide. Its primary objectives are to improve access to reliable information, facilitate patient navigation within the healthcare system, and empower patients at every stage of their journey—from diagnosis and treatment to long-term follow-up.

Korina Papadopoulou explained that Gnomon Informatics developed the project’s Interoperability Hub, enabling seamless communication between the information systems of oncology hospitals and the National Neoplastic Diseases Registry. By connecting previously fragmented data sources, the platform enables secure and efficient exchange of patient information while improving the continuity and quality of care.

The Oncology Patient Mobile Application constitutes one of the central pillars of the Integrated Care System. Designed around the real needs of oncology and hematology patients, it provides personalized information, digital support services, and easy access to trusted health resources, helping patients better manage their condition and improve their quality of life.

The first release of the application will soon become available, introducing its core functionalities and laying the foundation for a comprehensive digital patient support ecosystem.

During this initial phase, patients will be securely connected with their treating hospitals, allowing them to access information about their treatment plans and upcoming appointments. The application also includes self-management features such as a daily symptom diary and clinical questionnaires, enabling patients to actively participate in monitoring their health.

Development is already underway for the next phase of the platform, which will significantly expand the Digital Patient Navigator with new services and enriched educational content. Patients will gain access to information about available support services, including patient associations, psychological support, and other care resources. Future releases will also introduce secure teleconsultations between patients and healthcare professionals, as well as digital patient community services designed to foster communication, engagement, and peer support.

As a company specializing in the development of advanced digital health technologies, Gnomon Informatics is proud to contribute to the Integrated Care System for Oncology and Hematology Patients, a flagship national initiative that marks an important step toward more patient-centered, digitally enabled, and integrated cancer care in Greece.
